How many models do you know with a masters degree? Sami Miro, the entrepreneurial San Francisco native, who you may know as Zac Efron’s significant other, has always prided herself on the path less traveled. “My wardrobe is never based on trend—I wear what stops me in my tracks.” she says. Her philosophy’s worked well for her so far, as she’s built a brand as a vintage curator, alongside her modeling career. In a moment off from gracing the front pages of fashion’s favorite magazines, Sami took some time to speak to Galore about her dream wedding, movie style-spo, and the one outfit she’d wear for the rest of her life.
What is a typical day like for a vintage curator/model?
Every day for me is super different but it always starts off with emailing. Since I chose to be my own manager, agent, and publicist, I wake up to business inquiries. Usually there’s a lot of interesting opportunities out there so I look forward to them and that excitement motivates me throughout my day/week. Since my brand, SamiMiro Vintage is in it’s early stages, working on my business strategy is an everyday thing as well. Besides that, in any given day I can be consulting for brands, meeting with fashion showrooms, creative directing editorial photoshoots for my website, SamiMiro.com, shooting campaigns, helping my boyfriend with his social media, working on my reconstructed vintage clothing line, vintage shopping, doing social takeovers, working out and cooking.
Your goal is to find things that stop you in your tracks. What are some pieces that have fulfilled that recently?
I have about 20 vintage leather jackets of all colors, shapes and decades but there is one that I recently found that I have been on the hunt for a while: a super fitted, cropped black vintage moto jacket and I actually just found it while I was in NYFW. I also just got a beautiful vintage Chanel purse— it was a gift but still!
Which city has the best vintage? What are some of your favorite hidden gem vintage shops?
I have vintage from all over the world: Europe, Asia, Latin America, Canada and many US states. The best vintage is everywhere—you just have to find it
What do you hope to accomplish in the fashion industry, both as a model and as a vintage curator?
I want my name to be synonymous with vintage. When you think of vintage, the first person who comes to mind is Sami Miró. Modeling is fun because it was my first creative step after I quit my marketing job in tech and has since helped me launch my Sami Miro Vintage and colorable with other brands.
If you had to wear one outfit for the rest of your life which would it be?
Either an all red outfit or…super tight black jeans (waxed so they don’t fade), a black or white vintage band T-shirt (oversized so I can wear it as a dress or a shirt tied up in different ways), pointed-toe black leather booties (they’re sleek yet comfortable), a vintage leather jacket, layers upon layers of fine gold necklaces, rings and earrings (as always), and a black beret (signature SMV).
Which movie inspires your style most?
How do you like when men dress? Who do you nominate for best-dressed man?
Effortless is so sexy…black or dark blue denim, worker boots or dirty converse, simple white or black t-shirt maybe with the sleeves rolled, and a nice watch. I nominate Alexander Wang.
What’s the most frustrating part about people identifying you with your famous boyfriend? What’s awesome about it?
When people try to sneak in questions about him at the end of an interview ;) Honestly though…I couldn’t be happier. I don’t give the “frustrating” aspects weight because they come with the territory, and at the end of the day, life is great.
Okay, well, tell me about your dream wedding.
I’m not one of the those chicks who has her wedding day all planned out. I’m a spur of the moment type of girl. The only thing I do know is that I’ll look and feel bomb.
